Listen and be enchanted by the era's music.

Scott McKenzie's original
Lyrics
If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there

For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair

All across the nation such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation with a new explanation
People in motion people in motion

For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there

Bobby Darin

Bobby Darin : Dream Lover

Lyrics
Ev'ry night, I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms

(Chorus:)
Because I want a girl
To call my own
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

Dream lover, where are you
With a love oh so true
And a hand that I can hold
To feel you near when I grow old?

(Repeat chorus)

(Bridge:)
Someday--I don't know how
I hope you'll hear my please
Some way--I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me

Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Until my lover's dreams come true

(Repeat chorus)

Come with me, my love
To the sea, the sea of love
I want to tell you how much I love you

Come with me, to the sea

Girl

"Girl" is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney based on an original idea by Lennon and performed by The Beatles on their 1965 album Rubber Soul. "Girl" was the last complete song recorded for that album

Lyrics of GirlIs there anybody going to listen to my story
All about the girl who came to stay?
She's the kind of girl you want so much
It makes you sorry
Still you don't regret a single day.
Ah girl
Girl

When I think of all the times I've tried so hard to leave her
She will turn to me and start to cry;
And she promises the earth to me
And I believe her
After all this time I don't know why
Ah girl
Girl

She's the kind of girl who puts you down
When friends are there, you feel a fool.
When you say she's looking good
She acts as if it's understood.
She's cool, ooh, ooh, ooh,
Girl
Girl

Was she told when she was young that pain
Would lead to pleasure?
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back to earn
His day of leisure?
Will she still believe it when he's dead?
Ah girl
Girl

House of The Rising Sun

"The House of the Rising Sun" is a folk song from the United States. Also called "House of the Rising Sun" or occasionally "Rising Sun Blues", it tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans. The most successful commercial version was recorded by the English rock group The Animals in 1964, which was a number one hit in the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland and Canada.

Lyrics
There is a house in New Orleans,
They call the Rising Sun,
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy,
And God I know I'm one.

My mother was a tailor,
She sewed my new bluejeans,
My father was a gamblin man,
Down in New Orleans.

Now the only thing a gambler needs,
Is a suitcase and trunk,
And the only time he's satisfied,
Is when he's on a drunk.

Oh mother tell your children,
Not to do what I have done:
To spend your lifes in sin and misery,
In the house of the Rising Sun.

Well i got one foot on the platform,
The other foot on the train,
I'm going back to New Orleans,
To wear that ball and chain.

Well, there is a house in New Orleans,
They call the Rising Sun,
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy,
And god I know I'm one.

Green Sleeves

Lyrics of Green Sleeves by Marianne FaithfullAlas, my love, you did me wrong,
to cast me out discourteously,
for I have loved you so long,
delighting in your very company.
Now if you intend to show me disdain,
don't you know it all the more enraptures me,
for even so I still remain your lover in captivity.

Green sleeves, you're all alone,
the leaves have fallen, the men have gone.
Green sleeves, there's no one home,
not even the Lady Green Sleeves

I sang my songs, I told my lies,
to lie between your matchless thighs.
And ain't it fine, ain't it wild
to finally end our exercise
Then I saw you naked in the early dawn,
oh, I hoped you would be someone new.
I reached for you but you were gone,
so lady I'm going too.

Green sleeves, you're all alone ...

Green sleeves, you're all alone,
the leaves have fallen, the men have all gone home.
Green sleeves, it's so easily done,
leaving the Lady Green Sleeves.

As Tears Go By

"As Tears Go By" is a song written by The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, and their manager Andrew Loog Oldham, and was a popular hit for both British singer Marianne Faithfull in 1964 and The Rolling Stones in 1965. The song is one of the first original compositions by Jagger and Richards, as until that point The Rolling Stones had chiefly been performing covers of blues standards.

Marianne Faithfull 1964

Lyrics
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by

My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch
As tears go by

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin' things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by

Marianne Faithfull began her singing career in 1964. Her first major release, "As Tears Go By", was penned by Jagger/Richards, and became a chart success. She then "left her husband John Dunbar to live with Mick Jagger" and told the "New Musical Express": "My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend. I slept with three and decided the lead singer was the best bet." Jagger finished the relationship with Faithfull in May 1970.

Needles and Pins

The Searchers heard British performer Cliff Bennett perform "Needles and Pins" at a club in Hamburg, Germany, and instantly wanted it to be their next single. Soon after, in 1964, "Needles and Pins" appeared on the Searchers' next album, It's Fab! It's Gear! It's The Searchers. It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in America and was number one in the United Kingdom.

Lyrics
I saw her today, I saw her face
It was a face I loved and I knew
I had to run away
And get down on my knees and pray
That there'd come a day
And still it begins, needles and pins
Because of all my pride
The tears I've got to hide

Oh, I thought I was smart
I'll hold her heart
Didn't think I'd do
But know I see
She's worse to him than me
Let her go ahead, and take his love instead
And one day she will see

Just how to say please
And get down on her knees
Yeah that's how it begins
Needles and pins
I know, I know

Why can't I stop and tell myself I'm wrong,
I'm wrong, so wrong
Why can't I stand up
And tell myself I'm strong?

Because I saw her today, I saw her face
It was a face I loved and I knew
I had to run away
And get down on my knees and pray
Let there come a day
And still it begins, needles and pins
Because of all my pride
The tears I've got to hide
Oh, like needles and pins
Needles and pins

Runaway

A 60's classic
January 21, 1961, Del Shannon recorded "Runaway", released as a single in February 1961. It reached #1 in the Billboard chart in April.

Lyrics(Del Shannon/Max Crook)
As I walk along I wonder
What went wrong with our love
A love so rare and strong

And as I walk along I think of
The times we had together
While our hearts were young

I'm a walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin'and feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery and I wonder
I wa wa wa wonder
Why, why why why why why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway, a run run run run runaway

I'm walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
Wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery and I wonder
I wa wa wa wonder
Why, why why why why why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway, a run run run run runaway

Tales of Brave Ulysses

"Tales of Brave Ulysses" is a song performed by Cream. The music was written by Eric Clapton and the lyrics by artist Martin Sharp. The song is featured on Cream's album Disraeli Gears. This is one of the first recorded uses of the wah-wah pedal in rock music.

LyricsYou thought the leaden winter would bring you down forever,
But you rode upon a steamer to the violence of the sun.

And the colors of the sea blind your eyes with trembling mermaids,
And you touch the distant beaches with tales of brave Ulysses:
How his naked ears were tortured by the sirens sweetly singing,
For the sparkling waves are calling you to kiss their white laced lips.

And you see a girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise,
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea.
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body,
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind.

The tiny purple fishes run laughing through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.

Her name is Aphrodite and she rides a crimson shell,
And you know you cannot leave her for you touched the distant sands
With tales of brave Ulysses; how his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing.

The tiny purple fishes run lauging through your fingers,
And you want to take her with you to the hard land of the winter.

Badge

Cream were eventually persuaded to do one final album. That album, the appropriately titled Goodbye, was recorded in late 1968 and released in early 1969, after the band had broken up. It featured six songs: three live recordings dating from a concert at The Forum in Los Angeles, California, on 19 October, and three new studio recordings, the most notable, "Badge", was written by Clapton and George Harrison.

Lyricsby Eric Clapton and George Harrison

Thinkin' 'bout the times you drove in my car.
Thinkin' that I might have drove you too far.
And I'm thinkin' 'bout the love that you laid on my table.

I told you not to wander 'round in the dark.
I told you 'bout the swans, that they live in the park.
Then I told you 'bout our kid, now he's married to Mabel.

Yes, I told you that the light goes up and down.
Don't you notice how the wheel goes 'round?
And you better pick yourself up from the ground
Before they bring the curtain down,
Yes, before they bring the curtain down.

Talkin' 'bout a girl that looks quite like you.
She didn't have the time to wait in the queue.
She cried away her life since she fell off the cradle.

White Room

In 1968 came Cream's third release, Wheels of Fire, which topped the American charts. The opening song, "White Room", became a radio staple.

Lyrics
by Jack Bruce and Pete Brown

In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment.

I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.

You said no strings could secure you at the station.
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station.
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.

I'll wait in the queue when the trains come by;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.

At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd.
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten.
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes.
Now she's dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings.

I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.

Sunshine of Your Love

Cream's second album Disraeli Gears was released in November 1967. In it, 'Sunshine of Your Love' was Cream's only gold-selling single in the United States. It featured a distinctive guitar/bass guitar riff and an acclaimed guitar solo from Eric Clapton. It was written by bassist Jack Bruce, lyricist Pete Brown, and Clapton.

Lyrics
by Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Pete Brown

It's getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes.
I'll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise.
I'll be with you darling soon,
I'll be with you when the stars start falling.

I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love.

I'm with you my love,
The light's shining through on you.
Yes, I'm with you my love,
It's the morning and just we two.
I'll stay with you darling now,
I'll stay with you till my seas are dried up.

Chorus

Repeat Second Verse

I've been waiting so long
I've been waiting so long
I've been waiting so long
To be where I'm going
In the sunshine of your love.

Cream's debut album, Fresh Cream, was recorded and released in 1966. 'I Feel Free' was a hit from thia album

Lyricsby Jack Bruce and Pete Brown

Feel when I dance with you,
We move like the sea.
You, you're all I want to know.
I feel free, I feel free, I feel free.

I can walk down the street, there's no one there
Though the pavements are one huge crowd.
I can drive down the road; my eyes don't see,
Though my mind wants to cry out loud.

I feel free, I feel free, I feel free.

I can walk down the street, there's no one there
Though the pavements are one huge crowd.
I can drive down the road; my eyes don't see,
Though my mind wants to cry out loud,
Though my mind wants to cry out loud.

Dance floor is like the sea,
Ceiling is the sky.
You're the sun and as you shine on me,
I feel free, I feel free, I feel free.

I Got a Feeling

'I Got a Feeling' (Let It Be 1970) was another collaboration between Lennon and McCartney except that the first part was written by Paul while the rest from 'Everybody had a hard year' section by John. By now the Beatles 'divorce' was very clear especially bitter between Paul and John.
This video captured the last public performance by the fab 4 at the roof of the Apple Building on 30 Jan 1969. Breaking up was eminent.

LyricsI've got a feeling, a feeling deep inside
Oh yeah, Oh yeah. (that's right.)
I've got a feeling, a feeling I can't hide
Oh no. no. Oh no! Oh no.
Yeah! Yeah! I've got a feeling. Yeah!

Oh please believe me, I'd hate to miss the train
Oh yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
And if you leave me I won't be late again
Oh no, oh no, oh no.
Yeah Yeah I've got a feeling, yeah.
I got a feeling.

All these years I've been wandering around,
Wondering how come nobody told me
All that I was looking for was somebody
Who looked like you.

I've got a feeling that keeps me on my toes
Oh yeah, Oh yeah.
I've got a feeling, I think that everybody knows.
Oh yeah, Oh yeah, Oh yeah.
Yeah! Yeah! I've got a feeling. Yeah!

Ev'rybody had a hard year.
Ev'rybody had a good time.
Ev'rybody had a wet dream.
Ev'rybody saw the sunshine.
Oh yeah, Oh yeah. Oh Yeah.
Ev'rybody had a good year.
Ev'rybody let their hair down.
Ev'rybody pulled their socks up. (yeah.)
Ev'rybody put their foot down.
Oh yeah. Yeah! WOOOOHOO!

repeat with both parts.

[Oh my soul...it's so hard.]

Let It Be

In March 1970, the single 'Let It Be' a Paul McCartney's epic was released before the album (May 1970). It was deliberately recorded as the Beatles' swansong. However it was recorded in Jan 1969 and no one had any idea that it was going to be the last single. Paul wrote it out of the general feeling of despair as the Beatles began to fall apart. John preferred to spend more time with Yoko Ono, George was discouraged that his songs were rejected and Ringo even took off for a holiday during the recording of the White Album. John Lennon described it as 'hell to go through the six weeks of misery' in completing the album. In the 'Let It be' film, the last performance of the Beatles on the roof of Apple's office was recorded. As usual John in his pointed sense said " I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and i hope we pass the audition."

LyricsWhen I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Yeah, There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
(instrumental break)

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me.
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be no sorrow, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. hoooo' hoooo'

Do You Want To Know a Secret?

Do You Want to Know a Secret? from album 'Please Please Me' (1964) was written by John shortly after he married Cynthia Powell who was pregnant. the 'secret' was John's realisation that he was really in love. The flushing sound at the end was John's doing as he
making a demo in the toilet. Billy J Kramer made it a hit, the first time another artiste sang a Lennon-McCartney song.
Lyrics
You'll never know how much I really love you.
You'll never know how much I really care.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

I've known the secret for a week or two,
Nobody knows, just we two.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

Lucy In the Skies with Diamonds

"Lucy in the Skies with Diamonds" from Sgt Pepper's was the most controversial pyschedelic song the Beatles had ever recorded. John Lennon would want the world to believe that its title was not drug related (LSD) but from his son. Julian's art work. However, the lyrics, on deeper reflection and reading was a 'bad acid trip'

Lyrics of Lucy In the Skies with Diamonds

{VERSE 1}
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.

{CHORUS}
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Ah... Ah...

{VERSE 2}
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain,
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone.

{CHORUS}

Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties.
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

{CHORUS}

{CHORUS FADEING}

While My Guitar Gently Weeps

George with Eric Clapton

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George Harrison at his top. On the invitation of George, Eric Clapton became the first non-Beatle who featured in a Beatle song. He played lead while George was on rhythm. It was recorded in Sept 1968 though George started it in July as the rest of the Beatles weren't interested in his songs.

Lyrics of My Guitar Gently Weeps

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know why nobody told you how to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you.

I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don't know how you were inverted
No one alerted you.

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
Look at you all . . .
Still my guitar gently weeps.

I Feel Fine

The Beatles completed the album 'A Hard day's Night' in June 1964 and by mid August were back to start work on 'Beatles For Sale'. The song, written by John, had a guitar riff inspired by Bobby Parker's 'Watch Your Steps'
Lyrics of I Feel Fine

Baby's good to me you know,
She's happy as can be you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
Baby says she's mine you know,
She tells me all the time you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
I'm so glad that she's my little girl
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things you know.
He buys her diamond rings you know,
She said so
She's in love with me and I feel fine, MMM
Baby says she's mine you know,
She tells me all the time you know,
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
I'm so glad that she's my little girl
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things you know.
He buys her diamond rings you know,
She said so
She's in love with me and I feel fine
She's in love with me and I feel fine, MMM

Eight Days a Week

John claimed that this song was written by Paul as a potential title track for the Beatles followup film to 'A Hard day's Night'. Director Dick Lester pointed out that it wa srecorded in October 1964 where as 'Help' started filming in Feb 1965. Originally they thought of calling it "Eight Arms to Hold". Paul then heard the phrase 'Eight Days a Week' from a chauffer who drove him to John's home in Weybridge one day."Busy? I 've been working eight days a week" said the chauffer to Paul. It is the first song which has a fade-in. It was made the followup single to 'I Feel Fine' and made it to no 1 spot.

Lyrics
Ooh I need your love babe,
Guess you know it's true.
Hope you need my love babe,
Just like I need you,Ooo.

Hold me, love me, hold me, love me.
I ain't got nothin' but love babe,
Eight days a week.

Love you ev'ry day girl,
Always on my mind.
One thing I can say girl,
Love you all the time,ooh

Hold me, love me, hold me, love me.
I ain't got nothin' but love girl,
Eight days a week.

Eight days a week
I love you.
Eight days a week
Is not enough to show I care.

Ooh I need your love babe,
Guess you know it's true.
Hope you need my love babe,
Just like I need you.

Hold me, love me, hold me, love me.
I ain't got nothin' but love babe,
Eight days a week.

Eight days a week
I love you.
Eight days a week
Is not enough to show I care.

Love you ev'ry day girl,
Always on my mind.
One thing I can say girl,
Love you all the time.

Hold me, love me, hold me, love me.
I ain't got nothin' but love babe,
Eight days a week,
Eight days a week,
Eight days a week.

Octopus's Garden

'Octopus's Garden' was one of the few songs featuring Ringo Starr's vocals
LYRICS

I'd like to be, under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
in his octupus' garden, in the shade.

I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus' garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade.

We would be warm, below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head, on the sea bed
In an octopus' garden near a cave

We would sing and dance around
because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade

We would shout(out) and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
(Happy and they're safe)

We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden with you
In an octupus' garden with you
In an octupus' garden with you.

Norwegian Wood

Although John was famous as the married Beatle, he was not happily married. He was not faithful as he took advantage of the backstage groupies and had confessed to Cynthia that he had been unfaithful. This song was about him boasting about a girl he has 'had'. She took him home and asked him to admire furnishings made from cheap Norwegian pine.
John began the song in Feb 1965. He later asked Paul for help and Paul suggested that he should develop a story about a girl who leads a man on and ends with a man setting the apartment on fire as an act of revenge.
The song stood out in the 'Rubber Soul' album fro its use of the sitar. The Indian influence was beginning to show through George Harrison.

Lyrics of Norwegian Wood

once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me;
She showed me her room, isn't it good, Norwegian wood?

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair.

I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine,
We talked until two and then she said, "It's time for bed"

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn't it good, Norwegian wood.

Till There Was You

'Till There was You' captivates your attention with its holiday sound .

Lyrics of Till There Was YouThere were bells on a hill
But I never heard them ringing
No I never heard them at all
Till there was you

There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No I never saw them at all
Till there was you

Then there was music and wonderful roses
They tell me in sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and dew

There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No I never heard it at all
Till there was you

Then there was music and wonderful roses
They tell me in sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and dew

There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No I never heard it at all
Till there was you

Till there was you

Boulevard of Broken Dreams : Green Day

A favourite song of mine by Green Day
Boulevard of Broken Dreams
(2004)

LyricsI walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But It's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Till then I walk alone

Ah-ah Ah-ah Ah-ah Aaah-ah
Ah-ah Ah-ah Ah-ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines
What's fucked up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Till then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Aaah-Ah
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah

I walk alone
I walk a...

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a...

My shadow's only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Till then I walk alone

From Me To You

'From Me to You' was the third Beatles hit, top selling for 6 weeks in 1963 to become their 2nd no 1 in Britain. It was written in Nov 1963 while travelling by coach from York to Shrewsbury on the Helen Shapiro tour. The title was suggested from the From You to Us column in the weekly New Musical Express.

Lyrics If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.

I've got everything that you want,
Like a heart that is oh, so true.
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
I got arms that long to hold you
And keep you by my side.
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied, oooh.

If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
From me, to you.

From me. To You.

To you, to you, to you.

All You Need is Love

1967 was a year when conflicts were aplenty. The Vietnam War and the anti-war protests, ghetto rebellions, Six-day war in the mid-east. The Beatles were approached by BBC to take part in the first ever global TV link. The Beatles were asked to write a simple song that would be understood by viewers of all nationalities. John's All You Need is Love was chosen. Thus 'All You Need Is Love' was released during this troubled time, viewers saw it on June 25 1967. It was a re-creation of a Beatles recording session. It was released on July 7 and became the anthem of flower power.

25 June 1967

Lyrics of All You Need Is Love
Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game.
It's easy.

Nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time.
It's easy.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

Nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

All you need is love (All together, now!)
All you need is love. (Everybody!)
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need (love is all you need)
(love is all you need) (love is all you need)
(love is all you need) Yesterday (love is all you need)
(love is all you need) (love is all you need)

Yee-hai!
Oh yeah!
love is all you need, love is all you need, love is all you need, love is all you need, oh yeah oh hell yea! love is all you need love is all you need love is all you need.

Imagine

Definitive John Lennon
This is the mother of all songs!!! Beautiful!!!!

LyricsImagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Eleanor Rigby

'Eleanor Rigby' written by Paul McCartney was supposed to be named Miss Daisy Hawkins which he felt was not 'real' enough. It could be a subconscious thing as there was a grave in the graveyard of St Peter's Parish Church in Woolton, Liverpool, very near to the place where Paul and John first met in 1957. A haunting song.

LyricsAh, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?

Father mckenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Eleanor rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father mckenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

If I fell

It was written by John Lennon in Feb 1964, included in the Hrad Day's Night album. One of the more beautiful songs he had ever written, it was about an illicit relationship. He might be referring to his unfaithfulness towards Cynthia during that time.
Lyrics of 'If I Fell'
If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
'cause I've been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands

If I give my heart to you
I must be sure
From the very start
That you would love me more than her

If I trust in you, oh please
Don't run and hide
If I love you too, oh please
Don't hurt my pride like her
'cause I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
cause I couldn't stand the pain
and I would be sad if our new love was in vain

so I hope you see that I
would love to love you
and that she will cry when she learns we are two.

If I fell in love with you

Nowhere Man

Recorded in October 1965, it was the first Beatles song not to be about love. John wrote it early one morning after a night out and it marked the beginning of his philosophical musings. He admitted that it was about him. Like 'Help' this song was about John's lack of self worth and probably the fatc that he felt trapped in his marriage and suburbs. 'Nowhere Man' is another Beatles classic

LyricsHe's a real nowhere man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere Man please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man,the world is at your command!

(lead guitar)

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?

Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lends you a hand!

Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere Man please listen,
you don't know what you're missing
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command!

He's a real Nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody!

My Teaching Career (1993 - 2001)

Chua Chu Kang Secondary - the First year
When I first met Ms Sum Chee Wah in December 1992, I saw a firm but pleasant lady in a long skirt. She was starting the school and I could see that there were still renovation work going on. The Christian Cross at the front porch was taken down. I get to know that the premises was meant to be for St Margaret Secondary but they finally declined to move in.
As I was late, Mr Soon left though he was supposed to introduce me to Ms Sum. It was like an interview and I guess I was accepted, easy because I was a common teacher. Coincidentally, I met Mr Ong Hong Teong whom I knew. He was there slightly earlier than me.
It was an exciting time as there was a spirit of being on a mission. There were so many things to start anew though the uniform of olive green was already chosen. The badge was later designed with the logo, Serve, Grow and Excel.
The original team at CCKS included Celine Koh (Humanities), Mrs Quah Hui Tin (Art), Mrs Beatrice Kwek (HE), Jenny Wong (English), Mr Tan Suan Tin (a temporory teacher in PE) and Zulkiflee (WS Instructor) with Mr Samat (gardener)
There were 8 classes in the first year, 2 NT, 2 NA and 4 express.
Already, there were inherent problems with the NA and NT classes when they came in from primary schools. Some were gang followers (PHT and AST) and their problems were evident at around the Teck Whye blocks. Police were called in a few times. Ms Sum did not spare the cane and I became the unofficial discipline master.
The school did attempt to change its name to Stagmont Secondary but was rejected for some reasons. Even the name CHUA CHU KANG was not to be changed into its hanyu pinyin version of CHOA CHU KANG.
It was a pleasant year, not knowing that a tsunami was to hit CCKS.

My Teaching Career (Si Ling Secondary 1988 - 1992)

It was in Si Ling that I became a Head of department circa 1991. Then, there was no salary scale for a HOD, only a monthly allowance of $300. There were no clear job scope. I was asked to deal with estate management stuff, like being in charge of the school servants, repairs, grass cutting, etc. I have to deal with a variety of character among the group of school servants. There was the 'mandor' or foreman, Alwi who was a resourceful person. Then there were servants who borrow money here and there. One will disappear after lunch. Then there was the multiple repair jobs around the school esp patching up holes on the wire fences.
Technical staff at Si Ling :
the late Mr Kenneth Pereira, the late Mr Ahmad Rahman, Mr Lee See San. Mr Wong Meng, Mr Idrus (Instructor)
When I arrived to Si Ling, the staff filled me in on the happenings in and around the school. The first thing I did was to dismantle a private 'room' on the ground floor store. It was used for some 'hanky panky' by the previous head. The store in a workshop on the 1st level was a 'sacred place' as the teacher who used that workshop died earlier. I left it alone and one of the technical staff would pray there once a year.
The technical staff was also a mixed lot, just like the rest of the Si Ling staff. Each tolerated the other but good friends they were not. One thing which was regularly done was to have break or lunch at the coffee shop across the road.

Mr Singh was too 'humanistic' that many people took advantage (eg coming late, leaving early through the back gate) and there was a mess, discipline-wise. Once there was a parang wielding boy who came to school to look for a rival, one pupil who was in trouble with 'girls' was allowed to come back to school to help in organisation of activities, one boy was caught sleeping underneath the shelter of an expressway, etc.

Memories : of a pupil who died of brain tumour when he was in Sec 4. He would seek me out often to talk and would also join me once a while during my early morning run before the school starts (the route passes along the beach area). In an interclass soccer tournament, me and Mr Kenny Jones, an expat English teacher sponsored the class jerseys. They remembered us for it. Sadly, he did not survive the brain operation.
Was a PE teacher in Si Ling as well.
Built a garden behind the workshop. It is still existing after 20 years. I noticed it when passing by the school last week - early Dec 2010)
Mr Tony Tan's (the Education Minister then) car was vandalised during the 15th anniversary celebration dinner.
By 1992, things in school were so bad and topsy turvy that I thought it was time to leave the place, did not care where. There was no way I could continue in such a messy school. Again I seek the help of the late Mr Soon Eng Lee and he got me out, at the expense of giving up the HODship in Nov 1992.

My Teaching Career (Si Ling Secondary 1988 - 1992)

Si Ling Secondary Part 1
When I met Mr Barjan Singh on the first day, his first sentence was " Were you lost in the Woods?"
The next four years in this unassuming school was an eye opener as well as frustrating. Mr Singh was trying to be ahead of his time all the time but I believed that most of us were not too sure whether we were on the right route or direction. Some of his initiatives include having Class Home Room. Every teacher had their own room where pupils would make their way to for lessons. As there were more teachers than rooms, some teachers have to share. The teachers were urged to stock all their resources in the room. the disadvantage was the loss of time when pupils dilly dally on their way to the next classroom. It was abandoned after 2 years.
Anothe initiative was TAP known as Teachers as Parents. At-risk pupils were identified and matched with teachers - about 3-4 pupils to a teacher. In the morning, these pupils would go to specially arranged venues to meet the teachers and discussed about their school progress and problems, if any. It was done with good intentions but it did not last too.
Bangra Dance and hockey were given prominence and promoted in the school.
The biggest project then was to decorate the whole school's walls with 'quotes and inspirational sayings' Lots of acrylic sheets were ordered and many pupils were taken from classes to make these signs on the acrylic sheets which will then be hung up along the walls and parapets and any blank space around the school. It was a nightmare as pupils lost curriculum time and there was not enough budget (it weas not even budgeted, I think) to purchase the acrylic sheets. A lot of pupils were not supervised and as a result, there was mayhem. There were even pupils camping up at the water tank area during curriculum hours. They were discovered only when some people at the neighbouring blocks called the school to expose the roof top dwellers.
However, in such a turbulent time, the school produced a national soccer player in the form of Nazri Nasir, who became the Captain of the national team. I remembered him to be a well behaved and quiet boy even though he was in the National team then.

Desiderata

When time is dark, when it seems hopeless, Desiderata gives you the light and strength to carry on.

Desiderata -- written by Max Ehrmann in the 1920s --
Not "Found in Old St. Paul's Church"!
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

My Teaching Career (Woodlands Sec 1985 - 1987)

Woodlands Secondary part 2

Mrs Nara did not recover from her injuries and we found that we had a new principal in 1987. Her bright yellow Hyundai Coupe sports car was the sign of her arrival.
Mrs Rita Tong was a no nonsense petite lady. From the start she was very very firm in all matters and had never seen her smile at all. Shouts could be heard from her office frequently, either at the office clerks (Ms Ngui mostly got the brunt) or at some unfortunate teachers before they could even explain the matter in front of her. We saw some elderly teachers crying when they left her office. The school servants were told that the toilets must be so clean that they were able to sleep on the floor there!!! That's how high the demands were.
I nearly got into such a situation once when I missed an event because I volunteered for another. She called me in and before she opened her mouth I explained the matter and then abruptly left the office. She did not bother me from then on, only about cigarette butts left behind at the toilet by the night class students.
Mr Lim Lai Chuan came in 1987 to be the VP. He got hell from her and would often come to the workshop to find peace and solace from us.
There were a few 'affairs' in Woodlands. One Malay teacher who wore a turban divorce his wife and married his former Woodlands pupil. The most explosive one was when an Art teacher Mr ali Mahmood was accused of molest by a girl in the Art room. From the time it was investigated until the court case, he was on 'half pay' and would often seek solace at the workshop. His family was affected as Woodlands was a small town then. Finally after a few years he was asked acquitted and asked to retire as the girl refused to return from Malaysia to testify against him.
There was yet another when another teacher was investigated on 'irregular' behavours with pupils in the NCC room. It was not followed up.
My form class in Woodlands Sec 4D

In Woodlands, we hosted monolingual pupils from Nam San School in workshop practice. Some really primitive method of disciplining them included locking them up in the timber shed as they could be a real handful. During break, some would run out of school and start a fight at the bus stop.

By the end of 1987, the late Mr Soon Eng Lee a curriculum specialist asked me if I want to go over to Si Ling as a Head of department. I have no opinion of that and would not mind the change as he was a really nice person. He had a hard time with Mr Peh. Also the wind of changes in the Technical syllabus was changing, more towards design.
I was quite pleased when Mrs Tong personally told me she would not have release me if I would leave Woodlands as an ordinary teacher. Woodlands suffered for a couple more years under her before Mr Richard Dawson, a very nice man, took over. Mrs Rita Tong made it to the upper echelon of MoE soon after.

My Teaching Career (Woodlands Sec 1985 - 1987)

Woodlands part 1

The first day that I reported to Woodlands Secondary, I met Mrs Nara and Mr Ngoh Choon Ho who brought me around. the Technical Head was Mr Peh Tow Toon, a powerful figure in the technical area. It was in early Feb 1985.
I could never imagine the later events that occurred during Nara's time. The general staff was against her as she often picked on vulnerable teachers and delayed their promotion or confirmation without much reasons. I was also told to watch from the workshop's machine room how Mrs Nara would hide herself behind trees to catch teachers leaving. The whole matter became heated when some staff decided to take action by submitting a letter of complaint to MoE. I was inevitably drawn in when the group, led by a CL teacher came to school at night to approach me for my signature. I had just started as a supervisor of the CET programme by VITB. The other supervisor was Mr Low Siew Mun.
When the letter reached MoE, investigation began. During that time, Mrs Nara was trying to pinpoint the 'Indian chiefs'. She called me to her office, questioning me and was seen shedding tears. I was told not to say much on the matter. Thought it was left to that.
At the end of the year, we heard that she met a serious accident during her holidays in New Zealand. The life at Woodlands changed dramatically from then on.
In Woodlands, I was in charge of soccer again. We have some success in the A division boys when we entered the semi final and played in National Stadium. the etam was made up of mainly Sec 5 boys. We lost though.

My Teaching Career ( Raffles Institution - 1978 - Feb 1985)

1978 - 1985 Raffles Institution

My teaching career started in Raffles Institution's Technical department after I completed NS. At that time, I was staying at Alexandra Road and would walk to school through Jervois Road in the morning.
When I arrived in RI on Jan 1978, Mr Philip Liau, a very charismatic Principal (I was told) was in the midst of handing over the leadership to Mr A K Sigamoney. I was told by the teachers that Mr Liau love to play golf and would usually leave the school in the afternoons for the golf course. The school would be run by Senior Assistants like Mr Tan Kim Cheng or Mr Patrick Pestana.

Photograph of Mr A K Sigamoney

RI Staff Photo 1983

As an ordinary teacher, I did not have much chances to speak to the Principal. In the few conversations with him, I found Mr A K Sigamoney to be quite fatherly and a genial person. I don't think he was ever angry or have ever shouted. At one time I stumbled on his quiet room in the Science Lab when I went to look for a Science teacher. There I found him working peacefully with no one around.

During that period, we saw to the separation of the Pre U levels from the Secondary in 1981. It was a reluctant move. The sentiments then was not to be separated. The synthesis between the older Pre U boys and girls and the younger secondary boys was excellent. However, it seemd that the decision was already made and thus, the formation of RJC. However, the circle turned a full round when RI became one again in 2009 with the merging of RI and RJC.

The saddest incident was when some students were killed during an oversea trip, in a mountaineering expedition.
Another low point was the fire which destroyed the beloved gym which was very near to the workshop block.
I also witnessed the first public caning of a RI boy in the Hall. His offence : theft of a pair of branded sports shoes. I think he was an scholar from Hong Kong. On that day, the whole upper secondary classes gathered to witness the caning.
There were also the regular 'half-days' when the school achieved excellent academic results ('O' and 'A') or sporting achievements (National Champions)

During that time, the most prominent person was the Senior Assistant Mr Tan Kim Cheng. His loud voice was omnipresent as he was an ex NCC officer. There were also many outstanding teachers like Hector Chee, Ho Hon Kum, Himmat Singh, Ms D Tambayah, Mr Puhendran, Mr Alfred Chen, Mr Thomas Ong, Ms Hwa, Mr Pates, etc.
My CCAs in RI were soccer and NCC(Land). The latter CCA was more or less forced on me by the then VP Mr Wong Chong Heng but it turned out that I enjoyed the 25 years of service to the Corps.
On the first day, I was already told by Mr Puhendran that I would be a soccer master, assisting Mr Alfred Chen. RI soccer was always second to rugby. Thus all the bigger boys in Sec 1 were already chosen for the game, leaving the others to other sports like athletics, hockey, badminton. etc. In one frustrating year, nearly half of my C team was roped into the rugby team. Thus I have start all over again to form the B team the following year.

RI also opened its technical workshops to other schools like SCGS, Fairfield Methodist, Crescent Girls School (Mrs Sigamoney was the Principal then) and Anderson Secondary. I still remember the late Bonnie Hicks when she had technical lessons in her lower secondary years.

There were many many happy memories especially with the teachers and boys.
One was the regular lunch break at Zion Rd Hawker Centre with my colleagues and Mr Ho, a Science teacher. As it was 2-session then, we have some time to walk to the hawker centre and back, just for the teo chew porridge there. Then there were the regular squash and badminton sessions in the afternoons. One felt so at home in the school then. Funny that I have never used the swimming pool in my 8 years in Raffles.

Unfortunately, the winds of change started to blow in mid 80s. The school was going 'independent'. Moreover, we were not hosting any other schools as they have their own workshops. Thus, the Technical Department had to be scaled down. I volunteered to leave RI as I felt that I was the newest to join the department and that the rest was very reluctant to leave. Mr Lee Kai Heng was the other teacher who left at the same time. Thus, sadly I left Grange Road at the end of 1984 (Feb 85), not knowing where I would be posted next.

10 Unpleasant things Catholics do in Church

10 Things that Catholics do in church

1. “Chomping “ on the host:
This is one action which really rankle me. One can clearly see when the person is chewing on the host by his/her mouth movement. Don’t they realise that the host is the ‘body of Christ’? You don’t have to chew on it as it dissolves in the saliva of one’s mouth and could be swallowed easily during the time we say our prayers of thanks.

2. Exaggerated hand movements during prayers:
Though to each his own, there are some Catholics who make exaggerated hand actions e.g. lifting both their hands high up to receive blessings and then swipe along their face, something the Hindus do when they ‘receive the fire’. Maybe I am ignorant on the effect of the above actions.

3. Waiting for the priest for blessings after mass :
There are still many parishioners who will wait outside the entrance for the priest/priests to request for blessings after the mass. I remembered very clearly that this is discouraged by the priest during sermons as blessings by the Lord are already given during the mass.

4. Shoddy dressings during mass
It is easy to note the parishioners who were dressed in home clothes which are obviously worn for quite a while, round necked T-shirt which are creased and have seen better days, bermudas, sandals. etc. Don’t they know that they are meeting the Lord in Church? Of course, we don’t expect that they wear suit and tie (I believe that in Malaysia, the Catholics dressed that way i.e. in their Sunday best and took pride in doing that) but at least, be neatly dressed.

5. Tartly dressed:
On the other end, there are ladies who dressed tartly i.e. low cut, spaghetti or with short skirt. One would think that they are ‘dressed to kill’, not realising that such dressings are a total distraction.

6. Peace be with you:
Have you ever met stony faces when you say “peace be with you” to those around you during service, after the priest had done that? Some did not even acknowledge your greetings. I did meet such fellow worshippers and I often wonder why was it that my smile and words were met with such a reception. Maybe that person had a bad morning, had personal problems or did not like me. But whatever the reason, to me, saying Peace be with you is a message from Christ, not from me as a person or human being. The Lord wishes that there is peace around the world and we are his messengers. There is no need for a full hug or kisses, just simple words in reply ‘peace be with you too’.

7. Children in the congregation
The Church provides ‘Cry rooms’ for parents to be with their restless kids and yet we see some parents insisting that their little ones be with them in the main congregation. If there are no cry room, the parents could bring their child out once they start to become restless. God will understand. Where is the consideration and respect for others who want some quiet and peace to pray when the child is crying or jumping up and down the pews?

8. Leaving before the priest
How often do you see parishioners starting to leave their pews the moment final blessings were said? Yes, there are some who are genuinely rushing for time. However, can they ever wait for the priest to retreat out of the hall before they start moving out? It is simply called ‘disrespect’.

9. Walking to their seats after the mass have started (like during the gospel readings)
When you are very late, one should have the sense to stay at the back until the opportune time. In theatre concert, late comers are not allowed to take their seats when the curtains were raised. Only during the interval, are they allowed to go in even though they have paid for it. It is the same in Church. The wardens should not allow movements to seats until the time when the congregation stands for the part of the mass.

10. Touching the statues
Why do people need to do that? Such actions reinforce the idea that Catholics are idol worshippers, which we definitely are not. Already in the minds of other Christian groups they believe we are.

What I have written are not pleasant and may be just practised by a minority. However, such habits may eventually turn to practices if they are not mentioned or reminded. Imagine the effects they have on a young child. Such actions or practices will be perpetuated.
I may not be a perfect parishioner or even considered to be ‘holy’. I know I should be in my own ‘prayer mode’ in Church, be oblivious and should not be observing what other people do (i.e. not to kaypoh). However, some of those actions or practices which I observed are distractions and are so obviously displayed in front of you that you just cannot ignore. I felt that many of such things should not happen in the Church if we have respect for the Lord and for one another and if we really know to be a good Catholic in the daily life and practices. There are priests who have spoken about them in their homily but they still persisted. I remembered his Grace, Archbishop Chia spoke and insisted on proper dressings during mass when he was parish priest of Holy Cross many years ago. It was very directly mentioned and in a way, forcefully applied. As a result, many parishioners complied and it had the ripple effect. I still remember it after nearly 30 years.
I wonder if such actions mentioned are peculiar just in those churches I attended.
I wish humbly to say that I have no ‘holier than thou’ attitude but just a normal Catholic who wish that our faith remain pure and simple. The mass experience should be a pleasant one for everyone.
Note : I have noticed that there are very few concerns on hand phones nowadays.
