Raffles Institution Soccer 1980

In 1981, the U18 won the title at Jln Besar Stadium on 17 July 1981 beating CJC 3-0. This team was essentially the U16 team of 1980.

The team was coached by Suhaimi Ali, an old boy. Sadly he had left the world but his legacy would not be forgotten.

hi Swarnapala
good to see your comment, when I joined in Sec 1, you were on of the prefects who came into class to do a 'briefing' or intro to us.
Cheers!

I don't believe it I can find someone keeping the traces of RI Soccer.

Yes the 79 A team was an unbelievable venture. Auyeong and the 78 team brought fame and glory when they beat the hot favorite Geylang Serai VITB with a thumping score line, upsetting the favorites that year. It was difficult when majority of the main players left school that year leaving behind a small core group.

78 A team Marc Tan literally went down to the canteen carpark to recruit and identify the potential members to join the 79 team and brought in our juniors from the 1980 A team to join the 'car park soccer group' and the remaining 78 A team. We had 'no chance' then but we created the chances to bring up from scratch to build a spirited team towards the semis that year in 79. We surprised the school when we got out of the round robin and qualified for the semis. Despite total dominance in that semis, Swiss Cottage's Ruminathan crossed a ball that floated and went into the goal that shocked the team. If only .........., we would have been an unexpected finalist that year.

Deja vu guys!,,

i remembered that game vividly as their coach came and apologised for the way Swiss won and the manner the team played: with Rafflesian spirit

hi all

Boey here. Joined the RI team after Mar in 1981. Interestingly, i just played a game yesterday, yes at 47, against a no of old RI boys of that 1981 team incl Richard, Ganesan (who has a new name), Juraimi, bro of Suhaimi, who just told me that Su had passed away and quite some time ago. Was very sad as am told he passed away at only 42. Small world but Ju was with me in OCS 1/1983. I still see Chin Khoon who is in same church...

Wow its 30 odd years and i remember the training before the final, late morning sit ups in the mud in field before the whole school. Incidently for those who recall, i had injured a CJC player who jumped to head and landed on my knee.. he was my classmate when I was doing my 3 mths in CJC then!!

Swarna, hope to see u when we play a game as the ORI team do play quite often and am being kept in their loop! Will let Rich and rest know about this site.

Rgds to all

Boey

(PS many thks "rose with thorn" for this and the pics..)

Hello Gents,

Azlan Shahrir Ahmad, championship team of '78. We had a reunion a couple of years ago, a few of us traveling from Austria, South Africa and US (two of us). SARS-CoVID-2 cancelled the scheduled July 2020 meet but we will meet, God willing, as soon as we able to.

A moulding of collective memories would be awesome. Perhaps to include the possibility of the RJC girls - one Rafflesian (my cohort) has a daughter who was part of a football national champion team. A roar of our own.....
