EPL week 24

Swansea vs Man Utd:  Van Gaal would not forget about his defeat against Swansea in his first EPL game at the start of the season. What a welcome he got when the Swans won 2-1 at Old Trafford.
2-1: the Red Devils returned from Wales with their tails down after losing to the Swans for the 3rd time in a row in EPL. Despite having territorial dominance, they just did not have the fire power to finish their chances. Once again the powder puff defense let them down....Van Gaal replaced Shaw and McNair. With this loss they lost ground in the fight for Champion League places. Arsenal leapt ahead to 3rd.

Man City vs Newcastle: 5-0 The win was a warning to Barcelona whom the Citizens will meet in the KO round of the Champions League in mid week.

Chelsea vs Burnley: Burnley won only 1 in 13 away games, losing 8, so it is a nap for the Blues to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.
Jose Mourinho fumed as lowly Burnley fought back to draw 1-1

Palace vs Arsenal: Arsenal had 14 wins in 18 games.
1-2 Palace made the last quarter a tense affair when they scored. However the Gunners are in form as they steamed ahead.

Southampton vs Liverpool: this is a six pointer for a potential Champion league spot. The Reds are riding very high with their great form and their players recovering from injuries. The Saints are the surprise team of the season under Koeman though they lost a host of their players esp to Liverpool at the end of last season.
0-2 The in-form Reds closed in on the top 4 after this win against another contender. They are now only 2 points behind 4th place Man Utd

Spurs vs West Ham: 2-2 Spurs just failed to take over the 4th spot when they needed a 96th minute Harry Kane goal to equalize.

FA Cup 5th Round 15 Feb

Preston N E vs Man Utd : The Red Devils once again struggled to break through a 'lowly' opposition despite having 70% possession at Deepdale. In fact Preston led 1-0 until they collapsed later in the second half to lose 3-1, Herrera, Fellaini and a Rooney penalty for the Red Devils.

In the q-final, they will meet holders Arsenal at Old Trafford!!!!

Arsenal vs Middlesborough : 2-0 no surprise that the Gunners though the Championship team was on form and who stunned Man City at Etihad in the earlier round

Liverpool vs Palace: 2-1 Steven Gerrard dream of appearing in Wembley on his last season at Liverpool continues. They will play Blackburn at Anfield in the q-final.

EPL Week 23 (midweek)

Man Utd vs Burnley : 3-1 Smalling scored a brace before a Van Persie penalty decided the game. It was once again a stop-start performance from the Red Devils against a team who is in relegation zone. Where were the strikers?  Compared to the Devils, Burnley had more shots at goal. Falcao did not do justice with his inclusion. James Wilson, the home grown striker did much better when he came on.
This victory moved the Devils up to 3rd again after Southampton drew with West Ham. However, Van Gaal was looking silly when he did a 'Rafeal Benitez' after last Sunday's draw with the Hammers.   His show of 4 pages of 'data, facts, analysis, etc' was so similar to Rafa's rant against SAF a few years ago. Van Gaal should know better that he is above all that and not to be hooked by a willy Sam Allardyce who must be sniggling more now after getting such a response from a supposedly venerated figure. Now others will know how to really rile Van Gaal with little side comments like ' a long ball team'.....now, he is hearing whistles from the crowd for his team wretched first half performance against Burnley.

Liverpool vs Spurs : two in-form teams with Spurs riding high after 2-1 win over Arsenal.
3-2: Mario scored his first goal for the Reds with 7 mins left for this win, breaking Spurs recent hot run. The chase for the 3rd and 4th Champions League positions are really hotting up.

Arsenal vs Leicester: 2-1 the Gunners were surprised by the fightback from the Foxes who were 2-0 down by half time.

Chelsea vs Everton: 1-0 an 88th minute goal by Willian settled the tight encounter. The Blues were not spectacular as usual but they have the correct habit of winning just enough to be ahead. Who would bet against them?

Stoke vs Man City: 1-4 Initially this was a close match but once Milner scored in the second half, it was cruise control for Pelligrini team

EPL Week 22

West Ham vs Man Utd: 1-1 Once again, as so often during Van Gaal reign, the Red Devils played without that swaggering winning mentality though they knew that they could close the gap with Man City to 3 points if they won. The Devils needed an injury time goal by Daley Blind to rescue them. Increasingly, Van Gaal is under pressure to see that the large outlay of a quarter of a billion bears fruit. The team beneath are closing in, winning with style. West Ham outplayed them. The Red Devils have to depend on long balls...... Uncharacteristic of them.

Two derbies:
Everton vs Liverpool: With a late win over Bolton in the 4th rd FA Cup replay, 2-1 and the return of Sturridge to fitness, the Reds must be feeling good right now.
0-0 Dour draw between two teams who wanted to maintain their form.

Spurs vs Arsenal: 2-1 Harry Kane 'hurricane-Kaned' the Gunners as the headlines goes. He is turning out to be the player of the season if he continues the form.

Top vs Strugglers

Man City vs Hull: 1-1 another shocker for the Citizens as they have to come from behind to equalize against the goals- leaking Steve Bruce team. They are now further and further away from Jose Mourinho's team.

Villa vs Chelsea: 1-2  easy cantering win by the Blues who had never won at Villa Park before during Jose reign. They are now 7 points ahead of second place City though Mourinho stated that ' a 7 point lead is nothing'.

EPL Week 21

Man Utd vs Leicester: remember the last time both teams met?  the Foxes thrashed the Red Devils 5-3 after being 2-0 down. Since then, the Foxes could not lift themselves from the bottom of the table.
In this match, Utd brought out all the big guns. They led comfortably by 3-0 at half time and then switched off for the rest to allow the Foxes a consolation goal. The team failed to show the dominance and swagger of the past teams though this was a game against the bottom dwellers.

Chelsea vs Man City: both teams suffered embarrassing defeat against lower ranked opponents in the FA cup last week. Chelsea recovered somewhat when they narrowly beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Capital Cup semifinal during midweek.
Jose Mourinho's plan worked to perfection ie avoid defeat against the immediate challenger to maintain the 5 points cushion. Though playing at home, the Blues played with little adventure as caution was the name. Ended 1-1. Pellegrini took a swipe at Mourinho by implying that his side could win the title 'in style'

Liverpool vs West Ham: Liverpool must get over the disappointment of losing in the Capital Cup semifinal.
Daniel Sturridge came back from a 5 month injury to score a goal for in-form Reds. Sterling scored the other.

Arsenal vs Villa: 5-0 A thrashing for Lambert's woeful Villians. The Gunners are starting to talk about the title after this big win.

WBA vs Spurs    Spurs is on a high after reaching the final of the Capital Cup competition. They won easily at the Hawthorns, 2-0

Southampton lost unexpectedly to Swansea, 1-0
