The world greatest Karst area is found along Lijiang River which seems like a jade belt twisting between the lofty mountains.

The hour long river cruise brought us along the river in a leisurely pace. On board, the cook sells fried river fish, prawns and small crabs costing about 5yuan per stick.

On the roadsides on the way to Yangshou, we were puzzled by the 'grassland' which is defintely not rice or wheat. On alighting, we approached the friendly farmers who showed us the water chestnuts which they have laborously dug out from the hard mud. Imagine acres and acres of mud to dig and then separate the chestnut......

On the way to Liuzhou from Bama, we were looking forward to eat the famous 'Bama Pig' but could not find a place where they sell it. During lunch at one of the roadside restaurant, we had chicken in a 'washing pail' again (top picture). The 'live' chicken can be purchased from the roadside vendor (second picture from top).

On both sides of the road, there were many strawberry farms where we can harvest the berries and pay.

We stayed overnight at Bama. Interesting to note that even when it was chilly at night, there are groups of people dancing at an outdoor open space near our hotel. The dancers only clear the place at 10pm.

From Bama to Liuzhou, we travelled along the mountain road. We stopped by the side to admire the rising of the mist from the valley below.

Baimo Cave is regarded as the greatest Karst cave, with the highest concentration of negative oxygen ion. It has Karsts features like underground river, grotesque rocks, sinkholes. The formations stir one's imagination.

Bama has a village which is well known for the largest number of centenarians. The air, the presence of ions, tea, water and the food (mostly rice, millet, maize) may have contributed to this phenomena.

The scene along the way to Bama is made up of mountains and their interesting formations. We stopped on the side of the road to get a clear view of the mountains and valleys.

Guangxi Tour Day 1 - Detian Falls

The road from Nanning to Detain Falls was long, through the mountains. The scenery was out of sight, something from a dream.
Detian Falls is the largest waterfall in Asia. There are three falls separated by rocks and trees. They straddled the Sino-Vietnamese border with Ban Gioc Falls. Over there, we are one step forward crossing into the Vietnamese border. Along the river, there are many Viet boat vendors selling counterfeit items esp cigarettes.

Day 1 - from Nanning to Detian Falls

My wife and I signed up for a group tour to Guangxi in Dec 2011. It was a 8-day tour starting and ending at Nanning, the capital city.

We did not expect to be chaufferred around for 8 days as there were no other fellow travellers. It turned out to be a very enjoyable trip as the guide, Chen Marn drove us through the rough part of the province to reach the destinations.

After an overnight at Nanning, we were driven up the mountains to visit Detain Falls. The mountain road is long and winding but not very busy. Along the way, the road can get narrower because of the rock fall. we stopped for lunch at a wooden shack where the owner killed a live chicken and cooked for our lunch. The vegetables were freshly picked from the garden. We have to keep warm around the wood fire. A very simple life up in the mountains

Chengdu Day 9

The last day of the Chengdu Tour was spent on exploring the shopping malls. A very cheap retail place at Chengdu is the Kowloon Plaza. You can find very cheap clothings there. Along the corridors are salesperson wearing the clothes, still price tag hanging out, and modelling them.

Chengdu Trip Day 8 Huanglongxi

Huanglongxi is an ancient town located by a river. Attempts were made to recreate the ancient lifestyle and preserve the old buildings. The entrance area featured many new shops which sell traditional and exotic food eg tingting sweets, fried silkworm, small crabs, beetles, etc. The inner area has older houses. Second picture showed an old woman weaving a straw basket.

Baby, young and old retired pandas, one can find them at the Sichuan Panda Breeding centre located at Chengdu. The last picture showed a really retired panda in its last stage of life.

The misty dreamy scenery of Mt Emei was awesome. There you are among the clouds, floating along high in heavens. The infamous monkeys are found at the lower slopes waiting for victims.

Day 5 saw us making our way to Leshan where the tallest (after the Afgans destroyed theirs) stone carving of Buddha is located. The boat ride made its round on the Leshan River for a magnificant view of the statue.

Day 4 of our tour saw us descending from the highlands towards lower grounds. We have a short visit to the Sichuan Earthquake disaster area ie the school which was flattened. The place ironically became a tourist attraction now. The number of visitors there was overwhelming as it includes local visitors from other parts of China. The pictures shown the fallen school. the last two pictures showed the newly built school.

The natural landscape of mountains, numerous lakes and waterfall at Jiuzhaigou was a breathtaking sight. Being there on a raining June day was an experience which was unique. There were mist around at this high attitude, besides being chilly.

Day 1 : An unearthly midnight trip to T1 for the 0200 flight to Chengdu on China Airlines. Cannot sleep during the 4 hour flight, food (fried mee) served at 0400 hours, imagine that. Reached Chengdu in morning. Mr Liu was there to meet us, an unlikely group of 12 (4 families).

Immediately, after a quick Kentucky breakfast at the airport, the bus proceeded to Du Jiang Weirs project, a major project which diverse the river flow. It was a massive project of immense importance to Chengdu.

Free as a Bird was essentially a novelty single designed to attract attention to the Anthology project. The novelty was that it would be the first new Beatle single in 25 years.
This song was built around a discarded song by John (circa 1977). The recording began when Paul wished Yoko Lennon a happy new year in 1994. Yoko offerred three of John's songs when the possibility of the remaining Beatles working together again was proposed.
In Feb & Mar 1994, Paul started recording, using John's original cassette and digitally remastered the sound.
It reached no 2 in the British and no 6 in US.

In Nov 1968 after completing the White Album, George went to Woodstock to stay with Bob Dylan, spending time with The Band. He played this song during the Beatles recording in Jan 1969 and then recorded it alone in Feb to attempt to capture the feeling that The Band had in their single The Weight. However this song was not included in Let it Be or Abbey Road albums. Instead it became the title track of George's debut solo album in Dec 1970, reaching no 4 in British and topping the US chart.

In July 1969, one of Apple label signings, The Iveys complained that they were neglected by the Beatles. Three weeks later Paul contacted the group and offered them 'Come and get It' which he'd recorded alone at Abbey Road. By the time this song came out, the Iveys were the Badfinger. Another song from the Sgt Pepper's album, this was John's effort in combining his unfinished song with one of Paul's. there were references to drugs, marijuana, heroin. It was banned from the airwaves in many countries.

Paul said that the melody of this song was composed when he was about 15, shirtly after he joined John in the Quarry Men. he wrote it out of respect for the music of the 20s and 30s whihc his father played as a young man.
The song was about a young man who tried to coax a female he hardly knows into promising him a long term devotion. John had claimed that he would not dream of writing such a song. It was in the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

Paul woke up one morning with the tune 'Yesterday' in his head. He was worried that the tune might be unconsciously plagiarised. So for a month, he he wnet round to people in the music business and asked them whether they have heard it before. He then came out with the provisional title 'Scrambled Eggs' and began singing "Scarmbled eggs, Oh you've got such lovely legs". He concieved the song in early 1965 and only in June did he completed the lyrics when he went for a brief holiday in Portugal at Bruce Welch's (The Shadows) villa. It was also there that the one word title was hit.

'Ticket to Ride ' was written by John and Paul as a single and was described by John as 'one of the earliest heavy metal record made'. John often referred to this song as one of his favourite as he felt it was 'real', He regretted the change from a slow Dylanesque number to a jolly Beatles tune for commercial reasons. 'Help' was written with Paul at John's Weybridge home in April 1965. The lyrics were a candid insight into John's dissatisfaction with himself, eating and drinking too much, had put on weight and felt trapped by fame. He admitted that it was really his cry for help. It reached the number 1 spot in America and Britain in the summer of 1965.

'I Saw Her Standing There' was recorded in a 15-hour session in Feb 1963. The '1-2-3-4' intro was added to give the impression of a raw Liverpool beat group captured in a live performance. It was originally titled 'Seventeen' which told a story of a boy who sees a girl dancing at a local ballroom. After deciding that 'her look is beyond compare', determines not to dance with anyone else again.

"Wind of Change" is a 1990 power ballad written by Klaus Meine, vocalist of the German rock band Scorpions. It appeared on their 1990 album 'Crazy World' but did not become a worldwide hit single until 1991, when it topped the charts in Germany and across Europe, and hit #4 in the United States and #2 in the United Kingdom. Last night, 1st Jan, Vernon Cornelius and his gang brought back memories of the good old days through their music. The Shadows (1958 - 1968) was the one group which teenagers those day wanted to emulate. The Shadows were formed from members of several late 1950s UK skiffle groups: The Newcastle-based "Railroaders" (and also The Five Chesternuts on Columbia Records) who supplied Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch; and The Vipers Skiffle Group (on Parlophone records) who supplied Jet Harris and Tony Meehan from London. The Shadows, although originally the live and recording backing band for Cliff Richard, were later marketed as an instrumental combo, following their explosive chart success with the Jerry Lordan composition "Apache".

In March 1970, the single 'Let It Be' a Paul McCartney's epic was released before the album (May 1970). It was deliberately recorded as the Beatles' swansong. However it was recorded in Jan 1969 and no one had any idea that it was going to be the last single. Paul wrote it out of the general feeling of despair as the Beatles began to fall apart. John preferred to spend more time with Yoko Ono, George was discouraged that his songs were rejected and Ringo even took off for a holiday during the recording of the White Album. John Lennon described it as 'hell to go through the six weeks of misery' in completing the album. In the 'Let It be' film, the last performance of the Beatles on the roof of Apple's office was recorded. As usual John in his pointed sense said " I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and i hope we pass the audition."

The idea of writing a children's song about different coloured submarines came to Paul's head one night at Jane Asher's home. This was to develop into 'Yellow Submarine' which narrated about a boy listening to tall stories of an old sailor about his exploits and then decides to go sailing and see for himself. Paul used only short word in the lyric because he wanted it to be learnt quickly and sung by children. Yellow Submarine was one of the few which was sang byRingo. It was released as the flip side of 'Eleanor Rigby' in August 1966.

John claimed that this song was written by Paul as a potential title track for the Beatles followup film to 'A Hard day's Night'. Director Dick Lester pointed out that it wa srecorded in October 1964 where as 'Help' started filming in Feb 1965. Originally they thought of calling it "Eight Arms to Hold". Paul then heard the phrase 'Eight Days a Week' from a chauffer who drove him to John's home in Weybridge one day."Busy? I 've been working eight days a week" said the chauffer to Paul. It is the first song which has a fade-in. It was made the followup single to 'I Feel Fine' and made it to no 1 spot.

It was written under pressure when The Beatles needed a new single for the Christmas market. John wrote most of the lyric and basic guitar break. coming up with a riff that he derived from 'I Feel Fine'. Paul helped with the verses and his bass riff, something like Roy Orbison's 'Oh Pretty Woman'. This song is typically John's, in the summer of 1965, who wanted to reflect the influence of the growing drug culture. It was written as a double sided single with 'We Can Work It Out'

'Day Tripper' The beautiful guitar twangs of George Harrison made this song special who was also on LSD trips then.

Although John was famous as the married Beatle, he was not happily married. He was not faithful as he took advantage of the backstage groupies and had confessed to Cynthia that he had been unfaithful. This song was about him boasting about a girl he has 'had'. She took him home and asked him to admire furnishings made from cheap Norwegian pine.

John began the song in Feb 1965. He later asked Paul for help and Paul suggested that he should develop a story about a girl who leads a man on and ends with a man setting the apartment on fire as an act of revenge.

The song stood out in the 'Rubber Soul' album fro its use of the sitar. The Indian influence was beginning to show through George Harrison.

'Hey Jude' was one of the last songs performed by the Beatles as a group. It was also the first song released under the Apple label, beside Mary Hopkins' Those Were the days'. I could not forget the long long ending.

Paul always enjoyed a close relationship with John's song Julian. When John and Yoko started living together, divorce proceedings began between John and Cynthia. Julian was 5 then. Paul wrote the song with Julian's uncertain future in mind. It began with Hey Julian, then Hey Jules, finally Hey Jude. Julian only heard the first hand account from Paul only in 1987. Hey Jude became the most successful Beatles' single ever, topping the charts around the world and before end of 1967, sold 5 million copies.
